Improving Infrastructure

Driving within our area, I recognise that there is more that needs to be done locally to improve our road networks.

I welcome that £50 billion is being spent to improve roads in England between 2015 and 2025. I am confident that this road building and road maintenance initiative will reduce journey times, improve road safety, boost local growth, cut carbon emissions and future-proof our road network.

I am of the opinion that a new runway at Heathrow will bring economic benefits to passengers and the wider economy worth up to £74 billion and understand that many in our area are in employment or businesses related to Heathrow. I particularly welcome the action taken by the Government in providing £2.6 billion of compensation and mitigation measures for those affected by expansion and will work particularly hard to ensure that our area is well supported. I will also work hard to ensure that the air and noise pollution from the new runway will be minimal over our area.

I do not support the construction of HS2. I am not convinced about the benefits and phasing of the project, nor do I believe the cost is justifiable, given other competing priorities. Moreover, I am deeply concerned about the impact that the construction of the line will have on our constituency.

It is welcomed by me that the Prime Minister has launched an independent review of the HS2 project, which will consider whether and how HS2 should go forward. The review will look into HS2's benefits and impacts, affordability and efficiency, deliverability and scope, as well as its phasing, including its relationship with Northern Powerhouse Rail.
